The Real Story: Follow the Money Trail

So the NFL refused to run an ad for the U.S. border patrol in their Super Bowl program because it’s too controversial; Miller Brewing gave $30,000 to sponsor a pro-illegal immigrant demonstration and avoid boycotts of their beer, and Bank of America expanded a program for people without social security numbers to open checking accounts and obtain credit cards.

What do they all have in common? MONEY. These companies want the Hispanic market; they’re afraid of Hispanic boycotts and –worst of all– they know you won’t do anything about it.

But, quite honestly, stories like these are just the very tip of the iceberg…so this week I’m going to show you the whole thing — or, if you want to appeal to the Hispanic market, the whole enchilada. On Friday, I told you that I had planned to start naming the companies that are selling us out but as I thought about it this weekend I realized that a better first step would be to explain WHY that’s so important. The Real Story tonight is that companies don’t just benefit from SELLING products to illegal immigrants; they also benefit by using them to CREATE products as well. Cheap labor means large profits and, once again, Money Trumps Everything.

But how do these companies get away with it? After all, If you take away the crack dealers then there’s no more crack and eventually people stop coming to your street corner to buy drugs. So why aren’t we just shutting down the companies that supply the crack (these jobs) to illegals?

Well, the answer is that the very people who we’re counting on to STOP this problem — our politicians — are actually a major part OF the problem. About 8 years ago, the government actually decided to get tough on businesses hiring illegal workers and they performed two major raids. In the first one they targeted farm workers in Georgia and found over 4,000 illegal immigrants. In the second one they raided meatpacking plants in three states and found almost 4,500 more suspected illegal workers.

Guess what happened next? Onion crops went unpicked and meatpacking plants started to shut down. The farmers, sitting on a $90 million crop, used their political power with their Representatives, who in turn pressured Georgia’s Senators, who then complained to the INS. The raids quickly stopped.

In Nebraska, which was one of the targeted meatpacking states, Congress was all for the raids at first. Until the plants started shutting down.
Then, according to a former INS official, quote, “all hell broke lose.” Lobbyists were hired, the governor formed a task force and Senator Chuck Hagel complained to the Justice Department. The raids — which were so successful they were about to expand nationally — once again, quickly stopped.

In 1999, the government initiated fines against 417 companies for employing illegal immigrants. In 2004, they initiated three. You heard me right: three. The reason is pretty clear…Companies buy Congressmen, Congressmen have power and power controls policy. Cut out all the middle men and it’s simple: Companies control policy.

Meanwhile, Bank of America is hoping that this whole controversy goes away, but their silence and, frankly, their arrogance, is only making things worse. One prominent anti-illegal immigration group is now organizing a nationwide event called “Operation Bankrupt” that will hopefully send a very strong message to Bank of America management that people are not going to remain in their seats, they are going to fight back. It’s really too bad that I have to resort to telling you about boycotts to respond to companies like Bank of America, but their silence really leaves me no choice and, unfortunately for them — Americans are not going away, and neither am I.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stated the obvious with clarity in this New York Post interview: that She Who Must Not Be Named is “nasty,” her campaign “ruthless,” and that she would be the ultimate nominee for the Democrats. He also chimed in on another obvious point: Republicans need to nominate a conservative, for a moderate Republican against SWMNBN will absolutely lose.

If Newt’s running he’ll do it later this year when we’ve gotten fatigued of the current swath of candidates. I have a feeling that Algore is going to do the same. Newt’s my personal favorite right now: he’s the most Churhillian on the War on Terror, he’s got a great record of achievement in the 104th and 105th Congress and he’s a vision-guy. Electable? Who cares! I’m a Republican–if there’s a sword, I’m ready to jump on it!

JAKARTA (Reuters) – A bomb threat against the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday was conveyed to authorities by a pair of cell phone text messages signed, “al Qaeda,” local officials said.

“We received an SMS at 11:22 (0422 GMT) saying, ‘We will blow up the U.S. embassy in Jakarta in 30 minutes. Al-Qaeda,’” Desab Alkhoili, an officer at the Traffic Management Center told Reuters. “We received the same SMS again at 11:23.”

A U.S. embassy spokesman confirmed the threat, as relayed by police, and said security officials searched the heavily-fortified compound and found nothing suspicious. He said it was the second such incident in recent days.

Authorities gave the sender’s mobile telephone number as 628 522 999 2392 — a prepaid number virtually impossible to track. All attempts to contact the sender failed.

A Reuters photographer on the scene said that there was no sign of any evacuation of embassy personnel. However, Indonesians and others lining up for U.S. visas were told to leave the area.

(Sanford, Florida) Seminole County Commissioner Mike McLean was sent a package of feces in the mail, presumably by a disconcerted, albeit regular, constituent. No threat was included.

With a measure of confidence, I’d suggest that McLean is not the first politician to receive lumpy criticism. Even so, there are rules regarding the transmittal of feces through the mail.

A Postal Service spokeswoman said the U.S. Postal Service prohibits sending feces through the mail except for medical or veterinary purposes, and in those instances the samples must meet rigorous packing and labeling requirements.Without some implied or written threat, however, a poop-filled package won’t get the sender in trouble on the first offense.

Well, how about that? First offense means no trouble.Now, that gives me an idea. What if a few million Americans exercised a one-shot opportunity to send a loaf of wishes to Venezuelan thug dictator Hugo Chavez? It would be simple. Merely take an envelope when visiting the hopper. Fill it and make sure that the packaging is rigorous. Don’t include a return address. Remember, no trouble if caught.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Al Gore, a leading voice against global warming, is being criticized by a conservative group that claims his Nashville mansion uses too much electricity. A Gore spokeswoman said the former vice president invests in enough renewable energy to make up for the home’s power consumption. On Sunday, Gore’s documentary film “An Inconvenient Truth,” which chronicled his campaign against global warming, won an Academy Award.

The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research issued a statement saying Gore was not doing enough to reduce his own electricity consumption. The group disputes that global warming is a serious problem.

“We wanted to see if he was living by his own recommendations and walking the walk,” said think tank president Drew Johnson.

Utility records show the Gore family paid an average monthly electric bill of about $1,200 last year for its 10,000-square-foot home.

The Gores used about 191,000 kilowatt hours in 2006, according to bills reviewed by The Associated Press. The typical Nashville household uses about 15,600 kilowatt-hours per year.

The group said that Gore used nearly 221,000 kilowatt hours last year and that his average monthly electric bill was $1,359. Johnson said his group got its figures from Nashville Electric Service.

But company spokeswoman Laurie Parker said the utility never got a request from the policy center and never gave it any information.

Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider said: “Sometimes when people don’t like the message, in this case that global warming is real, it’s convenient to attack the messenger.”

Kreider said Gore purchases enough energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane gas to balance 100 percent of his electricity costs.

Gore, who owns homes in Carthage, Tenn., and in the Washington area, has said he leads a “carbon-neutral lifestyle.” To balance out other carbon emissions, the Gores invest money in projects to reduce energy consumption, Kreider said.

Judging from the latest polls, it might be a good time for John McCain to reconnect with the Republican base. The Arizona senator is no longer the media-anointed frontrunner by a long shot and could benefit from a high-profile initiative to rally the GOP faithful.

Others point out that any comprehensive legislation would beef up the border patrol, crack down on employers of illegal immigrants, and perhaps even continue funding for the security fence authorized last year. The last may be a McCain-engineered compromise, since he generously allowed in an interview with Vanity Fair that he’d “build the goddamn fence” if voters want it.
